Welcome

I am a PhD student in Computer Science at the University of Cambridge, under the supervision of Mateja Jamnik. My research concerns Data-Efficient Machine Learning, and I focus on learning from small-size datasets (~100s of samples) with a large number of features (~5000 features). Specifically, I investigate feature selection mechanisms, parameter-efficient models and how to train neural networks on such small datasets.

I obtained an MPhil in Advanced Computer Science at the University of Cambridge and a Bachelor’s in Computer Science at University College London. I was declared the best student in the entire Engineering Faculty at UCL, the best Romanian student in the UK and the top 3 in Europe. Before that, I was a competitive programmer, winning three Gold medals in the Romanian National Olympiad in Informatics, a Bronze medal in ACM-ICPC NW-Europe, and I qualified for the World Finals of Google HashCode.

I enjoy teaching, and my online course “Introduction to Algorithms and Data structures in C++" enrolled over 100,000+ students. I created 40+ videos on my Youtube channel, discussing philosophy, productivity, success and life in general. I also make videos explaining machine learning papers.

I was a Research intern at Huawei Research UK in 2021, investigating novel generative models for lossless data compression. Previously, I spent two beautiful summers in San Francisco, doing internships at one of the world’s leading data analytics companies, Quantcast.

I grew up in Targu Jiu, Romania.
